Gondo Coffee Factory was founded in 1998 in Kenya’s Mathioya District, where 727 producers deliver their harvests today. Farmers carefully hand-pick ripe red cherry, then sort through a second time to remove underripes and defects before delivering to the mill. Processing happens the same day with fresh water from the Kananahu stream, which is recirculated to protect local waterways. Coffee is fermented 16–18 hours, washed, graded, and dried under the sun with careful monitoring for consistency.

The region gets two rainy seasons: the main crop relies on the long rains of April–June, while the fly crop benefits from the shorter October–November rains. Farms here are small, just 1–2 hectares, and most coffee arrives at the washing station by motorbike or collection truck within 20 minutes of picking.

Nestled near Mount Kenya, the area is rich with native wildlife and indigenous plants, while communities here carry on Kikuyu traditions and language. Life, however, isn’t without challenges—education is costly, jobs are scarce, and many young people migrate to the cities in search of opportunity. Still, those who remain hold onto the hope that coffee can secure a better future for the next generation.

We’re honored to share Gondo’s coffee—a cup that reflects the care of its farmers, the richness of its land, and the resilience of its community.
